This project transformed trash into art. Artists in the Scranton area came together to pick up trash at a local park. Pieces of trash that could be cleaned, salvaged, and used for art were kept. The artists then created a piece of art using the trash.
For my part, I had three pieces. The large one is a treasure map made from pieces of litter and garbage we found while cleaning up a local park as well as things in my apartment I would’ve thrown out.
In the first piece, “Treasure Map” the viewer can board the S.S. Bloomer and follow the map to Ten of Spades Island where the treasure is buried just beyond the mountains. I used old spray paint caps from murals I did, mosaic glass found in a local park, an old shoelace found, and other objects obtained while picking up trash.
In the second, “S.S. Bloomer” you get an up close view of the vessel —🚢 🤣❤️🙏 Always praying we get there. This piece was made from a beautiful dish my grandmother gave me and I accidentally dropped on the floor but was too pretty and sentimental to throw away. The statue of the women praying is thrifted and the sail is made from a bag that held bunny food, a pen and a paintbrush that can no longer be used.
And lastly, “Ten of Spades Island” is a close up of the island. It is on a canvas that had a very big hole in it and couldn’t be used. The mountains of the islands were made from dried paint left over on my palette. The lid from an old butter tub and handmade paper from scraps of old paper were used to hold the name of the island.
